The Sections

Joeys - Your first jump into Scouting!

Joey Scouts is the first Section of Scouts, for boys and girls aged 5 - 8. It focuses on fun and friendship, and is a gentle introduction to a world of challenges and adventures through Scouting.

Joey Scouts are encouraged to express themselves creatively, through games, stories and craft activities. From building monsters and spaceships from scrap items, to growing plants from seedlings and singing songs together, all Joeys develop a strong sense of belonging and an understanding of the world around them.

Joey Scouts learn how to socialise with other children and help other people. They also learn how to recognise native birds and animals, and develop an understanding of the impact of our modern world on the environment.

A trained Joey Scout Leader guides a Joey Mob of up to 20 boys and girls as they learn to share and care for each other in a social environment. The safety of all Joey Scouts is very important, which is why there are always leaders on hand during all activities.

Cub Scouts

Cub Scouts is the second Section of Scouts, for boys and girls aged 8 - 11. It focuses on exploring the outdoors and living an active lifestyle in a safe and friendly environment.

Cub Scouts have a lot of fun doing a lot of interesting things! They are introduced to traditional Scouting skills such as tying knots and using a map and compass, and take part in outdoor adventures such as camping, rock climbing, abseiling,  bushwalking, sailing, gliding and flying, canoeing, and billy-karting!

Cub Scout also learn valuable life skills such as leadership and taking responsibility for themselves. They are taught the value of citizenship and how to give back to their communities.

Each Cub Scout collects special badges to demonstrate their skills and acheievements, and has the opportunity to achieve their Grey Wolf Award before moving onto the Scout section.

Scouts

Scouts is the third section of Scouting, for boys and girls aged 11-14 years. It gives young people the opportunity to take part in a range of activities that teach important life skills - while having fun and keeping active!

Scouts focuses on allowing young people to develop their confidence and teaches them how to work as part of a team. Scouts learn essential outdoor safety skills as well as participate in a variety of physical and intellectual challenges. The programs are designed to target each young person's own special interests, encouraging them to enjoy their favourite hobbies using meaningful badges and awards.

Epic bushwalks and camping expeditions, getting out on the water in a kayak, canoe or sailboat or even going up in a plane on a visit to the Air Activity Centre are just some of the adventures Scouts get up to!

Venturer Scouts

Venturer Scouts is a do-it-yourself mix of fun, adventure and personal challenge that brings together like-minded young people aged 15 to 17 from all walks of life.

As a Venturer, you may find yourself exploring wilderness Australia, camping above the snowline or diving on coral reefs. You could be abseiling into a limestone cave or climbing a sheer rock face. Perhaps you’ll learn white water kayaking or ride your mountain bike on an expedition across real mountains.

Whatever your challenge, there will be trained and highly experienced adults to guide you through the experience, to teach you the necessary skills and safety techniques. Venturers get the opportunity to travel overseas and to organised activities, to live with a different community to provide service to others.

Adults in Scouting
In fact, our Adult Leaders and volunteers play an important role in the Association, sharing their love of adventure and desire to enrich young people’s lives.

Leaders are the backbone of Scouting, and are dedicated volunteers who care about the guidance and development of the young people in their Section as well as the community in which they live. They are responsible for helping to devise and deliver programs that support young people in reaching their potential.

Not only do Leaders help youth members develop valuable skills in an environment of responsible risk-taking, but they themselves develop a variety of skills in leadership, project management and event planning.

No prior experience is necessary to become a Scout Leader. All Leaders undergo training on all aspects of youth leadership, program planning, safety and other requirements. They are also given resources of program ideas to help them get started.

Leaders are required to attend:

  • Group meetings one night a week during school terms

  • A monthly Leaders meeting

  • Group activities, such as hiking or camping trips, which take place a few weekends during the year.

Child safety is very important to Scouts. Therefore, along with training in child safety, Leaders must undergo a standard Police check to ensure the safety of our youth members.

Rover Scouts

Challenging outdoor activities such as bush walking, canoeing, sailing, caving, ski-touring, canyoning, four-wheel driving, rock-climbing and scuba diving all form an important part of a Rover's calendar.

Rover Scouts welcome young adults from 18–25 years and complete the program no later than their 26th birthday.

You don’t need to have any Scouting experience, but you do need to keep up with some adventurous people and their adrenaline-packed challenges!

Currently our Group does not have a Rover Unit. Those interested in Rovers should contact the Tallaganda Rover Unit, or their closest unit.
